Il re pastore is the third in the series of DRS recordings of Mozart opera seria, and it is quite unlike its predecessors, Mitridate and Lucio Silla. It is more of a pastorale than an opera seria, and indeed Mozart rewrote the original plot to arrive at the delightful story that emerged in Salzburg, a commission by the Arch Bishop, who wanted to put on an opera to celebrate the visit of Arch Duke Maximillian Franz.
